First Dinner Together

as per Filza

The evening after one of my Canadian medical exams, Takbir decided to ask me to have dinner with him. I decided on sushi once I realized Takbir had never tried sushi before. We met in the evening and he was dressed in a lovely suit holding a dozen pink roses. Much to my delight, Takbir seemed to enjoy sushi however I later realized he was just trying to be nice. I enjoyed having this opportunity to celebrate the end of my exam and the start of something that could eventually flourish into a beautiful relationship. We laughed and ate until we concluded with the typical "I'm never eating sushi again" statement following most AYCE sushi dinners.

Our First Movie

as per Takbir

For someone who makes me feel like I can fly it was fitting that our first movie together was Gravity in 3D. I remember hearing great reviews about it and was very eager to see it, so much so that I recall rushing to make sure we didn't miss a second of it, not even the previews. This was probably one of the few times where I was actually trying to get Filza to hurry up and not the other way around. We quickly drove up to the Cineplex by Square One got our tickets and popcorn, found decent seats and had an enjoyable evening together.

First Day Trip

as per Takbir

Ripley's Aquarium was where I first got a glimpse of Filza's inner child and fell in love instantly. It was also where we had our first picture taken together. The best part of the day was at the end when Filza refused to let me buy her a souvenir from the gift shop and settled on only letting me buy her an octopus thinking I wouldn't find an octopus in the gift shop but to her surprise when we both turned around there was a cute little pink stuffed octopus staring right at us which I bought and we named Ripples.

The Proposal

as per Takbir

At first I didn't know what I was going to do but I knew I wanted to give Filza everything. After dropping her off at work one day I drove around to find the perfect place in PEI to propose. A few days later I pretended it was just another day taking her to Brackley beach, then to the Dunes Gallery and a souvenir shop in North Rustico and then finally dinner at The Pearl. It was almost sunset when I took her down a wooden path with a song playing in the background from her favourite band to a deck overlooking the ocean with waves rushing onto the beach. At the end of the trail there were two dozen roses waiting for her as well as a big question from me.

Engagement Party

On a beautiful evening at Edgewaters Tap & Grill in Niagara Falls Canada with a lovely view of both the Canadian and American Falls, we celebrated our engagement with dear family and friends. We could not have asked for a better view, a greater assortment of food and desserts or better company. The feel of the gentle mist during the ceremony, the magnificent colours displayed on the falls at night and the great selection of music made for an incredible night. This was the first event of Inshallah many extraordinary and memorable events to come.

December 31

New Years Eve

as per Filza

I love fireworks. Period. It is among the few events that drag me outside in frigid cold weather. The firework display was absolutely beautiful, but the company was even better. We got to ring in 2015 together, our most exciting year yet! Takbir was very sweet to take pictures capturing my admiration of all the colours, shapes and sizes. I could not tell whether he was paying more attention to me, or the explosions in the sky.

"You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams."

Important People

Bridesmaids

Lalitha Velayutham

Lalitha and I met in medical school however I feel we became especially close once we left. Whenever I want to try something new or share an entertaining/hilarious story the first person I think of is Lalitha. One of my favourite memories with Lalitha is swimming out far into the ocean in St. Maarten and feeling the wind and water move all around us as a low flying plane passed by. She often knows what I’m thinking and we seem to always think along the same "wavelength". She is free spirited and kind hearted, she always knows how to make me smile.

Bandna Pal Maid of Honour

Bandna and I met in grade 11, though we became friends quite early on, our friendship grew deeper once we started undergrad at McMaster together. We went to the same medical school and have been on a whirlwind of adventures together, all those late nights and early sunrises! She not only knows me the longest but also knows me the best and has become a member of the family! Bandna is kind, thoughtful and has such a big heart. She is also amazing at her maid of honour "duties" haha. We have cried, laughed, fought and shared endless memories. We can share anything with one another, we’re sisters.

Puneeta Khurana

Puneeta was my first roommate when I started medical school and my roommate in Brooklyn NY. I never thought my med school roommate would end up becoming one of the best friends I have ever had. I can honestly say some of my favourite memories from med school involve Puneeta. The amount of laughter, our random songs and dances, panicking for exams, her missing hat, skipping class to pick mangoes, her words of wisdom "I don’t know about you guys, but I’m getting off this island" haha. Every time I see her I can’t help but laugh and smile because I instantly have a flashback of all our fun and memorable times. She is a an absolute gem and I am so lucky to have started off my med school journey with her.

Sara Chowdhury

I met Sara early into my first semester of med school. Our mutual friend Bandna was the reason we first started to spend time together. We grew closer towards the end of med school and have been close since then. One of the hardest times I have ever laughed in my life was watching her walk through a “puddle” that ended up being more like a lake in St Kitts. Sara is by far the funniest, most spontaneous and loyal person that I know. She knows how to make light of any situation and will always go out of her way for her friends.

Mehzabin Khan

Believe it or not, my most despised subject in first year brought us together… calculus. I still remember us sharing stories and asking each other for random bits of advice before a calculus exam during undergrad. After that we became the best of friends. Mehju was one of my housemates for 3 years. Mehju and I were not afraid of trying anything new, and were pretty good at getting ourselves into messes. We’ve climbed through windows after locking ourselves out, worn ridiculous costumes to Halloween events and always shared so much laughter. True friendship lasts any amount of distance or time.

Nadiya Vasdani

Nadiya and I became friends after we started our first medical rotation in Connecticut. With very little to do or see in Connecticut, we made the best of our free time: Metro trains to NYC, spending the night in Wall Street in a really cramped Holiday Inn haha. We always found ourselves in awkward and/or hilarious situations and I have always had such a good time with Nadiya. She is so easy to get along with, is genuine and so much fun! I’m glad we have become as close as we have and I know she will always be there to celebrate and take part in all the special moments to come!

Harleen Dhaliwal

Harleen and I were housemates during medical school and we lived in Chicago together. We became best friends on the island and did almost everything together. She and I made the most out of the simple things in life. I still remember our hilarious shopping trips in Chicago, terrifying ourselves on the island during power outages, our “speed” studying sessions. She is definitely somebody that I can 100% be myself around. She has always been very supportive and a great friend.

Groomsmen

Tanzeem Chowdhury

If you told me 20 years ago that I'd be spending most of my time in my late 20's with this 4 year old kid I would have called you crazy. Tanzeem was the first little brother I had. In fact, I probably introduced him to his first games and gadgets. Tanzeem has always been a source of laughter and entertainment in my life. Whenever we're together we can just be ourselves and more often than not we find ourselves on the same wavelength when it comes to food, comics or anything tech related. He was really the only person in my family that I could actually have a technical conversation with and not feel like I'm boring the person to death.

Imran Hussain Best Man

I've known Imran for as long as I can remember. Some of the fun memories I have of my childhood were when we had sleepovers either at his place or ours playing countless hours of Nintendo (NES). He was usually the first person to have the latest gadgets in the family like a PC or Super Nintendo and I'd enjoy going over because he'd always let us play. From Tank Wars to Megaman to Street Fighter, countless hours of fun and memories were created in my life because of him. He has always been there for me, whether it be for some advice or help on a DIY I'd decide to take on. Along with my older brother and Imran, we were known as the three stooges. I'm not sure if that's changed but that's a good thing.

Tanbir Sarker

Tanbir has been my partner in crime for as long as I can remember. Like being locked in a room but helping each other climb out the window and then head over to the closest park and play. We use to get into so much trouble together but we always had each other’s back. I couldn't have asked for a better older brother. The bike rides, adventures, and explorations we used to have I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. If people consider me self-sacrificing then it's definitely a quality I got from him. Regardless of how crazy things get we have always been there for each other through thick and thin. If there’s one thing I know for certain it's that no matter where I am, or how down and out I get, Tanbir will always be there.

Ibnul Sarker

Ibnul is the glue that keeps everything together. Helping raise him taught me so much about responsibility in my life. From his first steps to his first bike to his first of almost everything Ibnul kept the inner child in me alive. Watching him grow and learn helped me grow and learn all over again as well. He's accomplished so much already, things that I could have only dreamed to achieve at his age. He is always there to give me a helping hand whenever I need it and is so calm and humble that you'll never hear him complain. He’s the one thing that makes me feel proud in my life.
